PSA Blood Test

This blood test measures prostate specific antigen (PSA), a protein produced by the prostate gland. PSA is a single marker that can be affected by several non-cancerous factors, and PSA testing has recognised benefits and harms. For that reason, men considering this test are encouraged to talk with their doctor about whether it is right for them beforehand, and to review any result with their doctor afterwards, who can place it in context and advise on any next steps. This test does not diagnose any condition.
Men who are thinking of getting tested should talk to their doctor about the benefits and harms of prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing. Current evidence shows that the PSA test should not be used for population screening, as the harms outweigh the benefits - refer here for more information.
