Are you living with an allergy?
Allergens trigger immune cells to release histamine and other inflammatory chemicals that result in an allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergy are varied and can include itching, burning and swelling around the mouth, swelling of face or eyes, runny nose, skin rash, hives, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, breathing difficulties, vomiting and nausea.
Allergies involve a special class of antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE). IgE is normally found in very small amounts in the blood, and functions as part of the body's immune system. Different IgE antibodies detect different allergens, and the IgE antibody test is used to screen for an allergy to a specific allergen by measuring the amount of that suspected IgE antibody in the blood.
